What is Spirit
Spirit is respect for your opponent. You want to give them your best and you want the best from
them. A win at the cost of respect is not a victory. Respect means:
never putting anyone in harms way or fouling on purpose,
knowing the rules and/or being open to discussions on them, and
showing up on time.
Ultimate's rules, like any sport's, can take a while to learn. However, they can, for the most part, be summed up by the concept of "Spirit." Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed-upon rules of the game or the basic joy of play. -Vancouver Ultimate League
In Ultimate, an intentional foul is considered cheating and a gross offense against the spirit of sportsmanship. Often a player is in a position where it is clearly to a player's advantage to foul or commit some infraction, but that player is morally bound to abide by the rules. The integrity of Ultimate depends on each player's responsibility to uphold the spirit of the game, and this responsibility should not be taken lightly. -Preface to the Rules of Ultimate

| D | An insult to the game of ultimate. Negative atmosphere. Players openly questioning the integrity of other players. Contesting rules. No one on your team had fun. |
| F | No respect. Multiply dangerous plays, which continued after discussion. Behavior so out of line that no one had fun. No knowledge of the game and was not receptive to learning. No one on your team had fun. |
